Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets massive Switch 2 update with 8-player local chaos
Nintendo has dropped a surprise update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, bringing a host of new features specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. According to patch notes reported by Polygon, the update delivers "clearer visuals" for the new hardware and faster loading times.
The biggest addition, per both Polygon and Nintendo Life, is the expansion of local split-screen multiplayer. Players can now cram up to eight racers onto a single screen using a Switch 2, a feature that doubles the previous player limit. To make it happen, you'll need at least one new Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 Pro Controller, plus enough controllers for everyone else.
The update also introduces CameraPlay support for the Switch 2. This feature, similar to one in Mario Kart World, lets players plug in a USB camera to see their friends' faces during local or online multiplayer sessions.
For players who own the Booster Course Pass, there's a new endurance challenge. A "96 Races" mode in the VS Race settings lets you marathon through every single course in the game, including all DLC tracks.
Nintendo Life notes this is the second free Switch 2 update for a legacy Switch title this week, following a similar patch for Pikmin 3 Deluxe.
