Masashi Kishimoto returns to write and draw new Naruto manga Shadow Rising

A brand-new Naruto manga and a four-part crossover anime were announced at New York Comic Con 2026, according to Kotaku.
The new manga is titled 'Naruto: Shadow Rising' and is set between the original series and the Boruto sequel. Original creator Masashi Kishimoto will both write and draw the project, a return to direct artistic duties after mostly supervising the divisive Boruto.
Kotaku reports a trailer for the manga premiered at the event. It shows Sasuke's daughter Sarada as a baby, which places the story roughly a decade before Boruto begins. The trailer also features Naruto and Sasuke fighting again, as highlighted in an official press release.
No plot details are known, with the first chapter scheduled to drop in 2027.
The announced four-part anime is a crossover miniseries with the manga 'Ninkū', titled 'Naruto x Ninkū'. Kishimoto, per Kotaku, provided a quote stating Ninkū was his main inspiration for Naruto and that he created Naruto because he wanted to see Ninkū continue.
Kishimoto reportedly said, 'Without Ninkū, Naruto would not exist.' The 1995 Ninkū anime is largely unknown in the West, with its English dub considered lost media, but the property remains huge in Japan.
