Massive 12TB Steam leak spills a decade of game betas and prototypes
A staggering amount of data from Valve’s Steam servers has reportedly leaked online, exposing a treasure trove of unreleased game builds and prototypes from 2003 to 2013. Per VGC, the leak encompasses between 12 and 13 terabytes of information, covering nearly everything uploaded to the Steam platform during that decade.
According to Valve-focused accounts like Gabe Follower, who reported the leak on X, the data includes early versions of major Valve titles. PC Gamer notes this includes the complete, much-sought-after 2009 beta build of Portal 2, featuring a different story and a GLaDOS-guided opening. The leak is also said to contain prototypes of the canceled puzzle game F-Stop, early builds of Left 4 Dead and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and assets potentially linked to the never-released Half-Life 2: Episode 3, including a weapon called the Weaponizer.
The scope extends far beyond Valve. As reported by VGC and Kotaku, the torrent includes beta content for numerous third-party games. Insiders like AestheticGamer have highlighted early builds of Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Mirror’s Edge prototypes from 2007, and betas for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and EA's Spore.
Per the reports, the data may have been exposed due to a Valve security oversight. One account, Scolcer, claimed on X that the directory was publicly accessible with no password protection, blaming the leak entirely on Valve. The cutoff in 2013 reportedly coincides with when Valve switched from its old “Steam2” content server system to a new one.
With the leak now circulating as a torrent file, the community is digging in. VGC reports that early discoveries, like a Portal 2 beta intro sequence, are already being shared online. Former Valve developer Elan Ruskin, who worked on Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, commented on the leak, stating on X, “every good idea we had went into the final thing we shipped, and anything not in the final version was not a good idea.”
