Matthew McConaughey says he passed on playing Joel in The Last of Us
Turns out, Joel could've been a whole lot more Texan. Matthew McConaughey has confirmed he was in the running for the lead role in HBO's smash hit The Last of Us, according to TheWrap.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Oscar winner admitted the gritty post-apocalyptic drama wasn't the right fit. McConaughey said, per GameSpot, "The Last of Us was really good but it wasn't for me at the time."
Of course, the part of the grizzled smuggler eventually went to Pedro Pascal, who has earned widespread acclaim for his performance. It seems McConaughey's loss was Pascal's, and the show's, gain.
