Melissa Barrera says she'd only return to Scream if Spyglass is out
Melissa Barrera has opened up about her potential return to the Scream franchise, and it comes with a major condition. According to TheWrap, Barrera said she would only consider reprising her role as Samantha Carpenter if the series left the hands of its current rights holder, Spyglass Media Group.
Barrera was fired from the franchise in November 2023 over her social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, which Spyglass deemed antisemitic. Speaking on the "Just Watch" show, she stated, "Not with the company that currently holds the rights." She added that the studio's leadership "made it a point to label me something that I'm not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right."
Even if an apology were issued, Barrera said she "wouldn't go back to work with them." Her stance is that the franchise would need to move to a company that she believes honors the legacy of original director Wes Craven.
JoBlo also reported on her comments. Barrera's exit triggered a chain reaction, with her onscreen sister Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon also departing the series. The upcoming Scream 7 has since brought back original star Neve Campbell, with Kevin Williamson set to write and direct.
