Metro 2039's Devs Say the War in Ukraine Forced a Darker, More Political Story
The next Metro game is being forged in a real warzone, and its developers say that reality has fundamentally reshaped the project. Per Eurogamer, Metro 2039 is being developed primarily in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion, with staff facing daily threats like drone strikes and power outages.
Executive producer Jon Bloch told the outlet that the team's four-and-a-half years living in a state of war forced a major shift in the game's themes. "The previous games were about preventing war," Bloch said. Now, the focus is on "the consequences of war." He added that the story's moral ambiguity is gone, replaced by a clearer condemnation of authoritarianism, which the team now sees as unequivocally evil.
The game will feature a voiced protagonist for the first time in the main series, a character known as The Stranger. According to a report from Polygon, this change is to make the game's political commentary more explicit. The Stranger will navigate a Moscow metro now unified under a fascist regime called the Novoreich, led by the returning character Hunter.
A hands-on preview by PC Gamer confirms a return to the series' claustrophobic, resource-scavenging roots, but with open-ended areas inspired by Metro Exodus. Players will explore above-ground war-torn landscapes, managing gas mask filters while choosing between stealth and combat to complete objectives.
Co-creative director Pawel Ulmer told Eurogamer the team channels its daily reality into the game. "We put all the negativity and aggression into the product," he said, calling the act of development under these conditions "unbelievable." Metro 2039 is scheduled for release in February 2027.
