Modern Warfare 4's DMZ Mode Gets Detailed With Permadeath Risk And Crafting

Infinity Ward has spilled the beans on DMZ, the extraction shooter mode coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. IGN reports the mode is getting a major overhaul from its 2022 debut, aiming to be a core part of the package with dedicated progression and a social hub.
The studio says DMZ will feature a separate leveling track with dozens of ranks, valuable unlocks, and narrative elements. Players will have a forward operating base to prep between deployments, with a firing range, mission tracking, and a crafting system.
According to Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O'Hara, the team responded to fan feedback that the original mode lacked consequences. This time, your custom operator can die for good, costing resources to revive. Looted items can also be permanently lost if you're killed before extracting.
Those salvaged items feed into a fabrication system where players can produce armor, gear, consumables, and what appears to be killstreaks or AI support. The developers are calling it an "action extraction shooter," promising constant threats from AI enemies, bosses, and rival players to keep the pressure high.
Enemy types will include drones, patrols in vehicles and helicopters, tanks, and elite foes. The map will have variable threat zones that escalate based on player actions, encouraging stealthy play with suppressed weapons and melee to avoid drawing heat.
Infinity Ward pledges ongoing post-launch support with map updates and seasonal dynamic weather. DMZ will launch with Modern Warfare 4 on October 23 and, per IGN, will not be a free-to-play offering.
