National Treasure 3 gets green light with script approved, Nicolas Cage set to return
The hunt is back on. Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed a third 'National Treasure' film is moving forward, with Nicolas Cage expected to reprise his role as historian and treasure hunter Ben Gates. The Hollywood Reporter and JoBlo both covered the announcement, which Turteltaub made during a live podcast event in Philadelphia.
Turteltaub told the audience they were the first to hear the news publicly. "It's finally real. Now, it's 'Hollywood real,' meaning things could happen," he said, per The Hollywood Reporter. He joked that while his own potential departure might not stop the film, Cage getting "hit by a bus" would derail it entirely.
The director confirmed a key hurdle has been cleared. "We finally have a script that I like," he said, adding that Disney has given the project a thumbs-up. JoBlo's report notes Turteltaub said, "to whatever extent we can, everyone's back," signaling the return of other original cast members.
No official casting beyond Cage has been announced. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Disney declined to comment when reached.
The original 2004 film and its 2007 sequel were major box office hits for Disney. The franchise later spawned a Disney+ series, 'National Treasure: Edge of History,' which launched in 2022 and was not renewed for a second season.
