National Treasure 3 Is Finally Happening, Director Jon Turteltaub Confirms
Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that National Treasure 3 is officially in development. He made the announcement at a live recording for the National Treasure Hunt podcast, as reported by Variety.
Turteltaub told the audience they were the first to hear the news. He described the project as 'finally real,' though he cautioned it was 'Hollywood real,' meaning plans could still change. He joked that if star Nicolas Cage were unavailable, there would be no movie.
According to TheWrap, a script is currently being written and has Disney's approval. Turteltaub said the studio told him the concept 'sounds like a movie we can make.'
He also stated the goal is to bring back the original cast, including Cage. Neither Disney nor Cage's representatives provided an immediate comment to the outlets.
The first two films, released in 2004 and 2007, starred Cage as historian and treasure hunter Ben Gates. A spinoff series, National Treasure: Edge of History, streamed on Disney+ in 2022 but lasted only one season.
