NCIS Season 24 Premiere Sees Tony DiNozzo Return, Poised to Become Director

The NCIS season 24 premiere brought a familiar face back into the fold, per TVLine. Michael Weatherly reprised his role as Tony DiNozzo, who was revealed to be the one shot in the prior season's cliffhanger, having been 'barely grazed' by McGee's son Mateo.
DiNozzo is in D.C. to open a satellite office for his security firm. The plot kicks off when Mateo is implicated in a kidnapping of the Secretary of the Navy's daughter after being forced to steal classified information. The team, including DiNozzo, works off the books to solve the case after new director LaRoche suspends Nick and tries to fire Parker.
TVLine's recap details that the kidnappers' demand for a specific file turned out to be a diversion for a hidden stash of diamonds. DiNozzo, referencing 'The Goonies,' figured out the real target and was rescued by Nick and Jess just as armed men moved in on him.
In the episode's closing moments, the Secretary of Navy visits DiNozzo, informing him that LaRoche was the wrong choice for director. She reveals that Ziva had already pushed Tony to take the job and that a press release announcing him as the new NCIS director has already been sent out.
