Netflix drops trailer for Florence Pugh's 'East of Eden' series
Netflix has pulled back the curtain on its new take on a classic. The streamer released a trailer for its limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck's "East of Eden," per TVLine.
Florence Pugh leads the cast as Cathy Ames, seen meeting and marrying a man named Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott. The trailer hints at a dark turn, with a fleeting shot showing Pugh's character bloodied and collapsed on a floor. Her smile after Adam promises happiness seems to vanish fast.
The clip suggests Cathy's nature may be deceptive. She's later seen in an opulent salon, surrounded by a crowd where the women may be trading favors. Voiceover from Cathy states that malice can be hidden behind a facade of virtue, affection, or physical allure, according to TVLine. Adam's brother Charles, played by Mike Faist, warns him to cast Cathy out before she destroys him.
The Hollywood Reporter notes the ensemble also includes Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, and Martha Plimpton. Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film, is the writer and co-showrunner.
All seven episodes of the series, which follows the Trask family and the "haunting" Cathy, will premiere on Netflix on October 1.
