Netflix Greenlights 'Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft' Series, Scraps Another Project
Netflix is developing a new live-action series based on the "Dungeons & Dragons" gothic-horror setting "Ravenloft," according to Variety. The streamer has also scrapped a separate "Dungeons & Dragons" project set in "The Forgotten Realms" that was previously in development.
Per JoBlo, the "Ravenloft" series will be executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón and writer John August. The show will be made in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro-owned maker of "Dungeons & Dragons."
JoBlo reports that the series will focus on the character Strahd von Zarovich, tracking his descent from tragic antihero to full-fledged monster. It's described as character-driven, swapping typical fantasy dungeon crawls for stories filled with dark magic and supernatural themes.
The outlet notes that the tone is being compared internally to Netflix's "Wednesday." This connection is bolstered by August's history of collaborating with Tim Burton on projects like "Big Fish" and "Corpse Bride."
No release date or casting information was announced. The project is currently in the development phase at Netflix.
