Netflix's Wonka Reality Show Uses AI Gene Wilder Voice, Original Oompa Loompa
Netflix has dropped the trailer for a new reality competition series straight out of a chocolate factory, and it's serving up a dose of digital necromancy with it. Titled "Wonka's The Golden Ticket," the nine-episode show features the AI-recreated voice of the late Gene Wilder as its host, a move The Hollywood Reporter calls "unsettling" and potentially "creepy."
The show, per the outlet, follows twelve pairs of contestants navigating a factory full of games and challenges inspired by Roald Dahl's classic story. Netflix and producer Eureka Productions secured permission from Wilder's estate and partnered with AI firm ElevenLabs to generate the iconic actor's vocal performance.
Wilder's widow, Karen B. Wilder, provided a statement on behalf of the estate, saying they are "delighted" the series celebrates the "warmth and imagination" he brought to Willy Wonka and will introduce that magic to a new generation.
The cast also includes a performer from the 1971 film, with actor Rusty Goffe appearing. Goffe was among the troupe portraying the musical Oompa Loompas in the original movie.
"Wonka's The Golden Ticket" is set to premiere on Netflix on September 23.
