New Sense and Sensibility Sets Box Office Record For Jane Austen Films

The 2026 adaptation of 'Sense and Sensibility' has notched the best domestic opening weekend ever for a period-set Jane Austen movie, according to Deadline.
Per the report, the film is projected to earn $6.7 million in its first three days. That sum places it at number five on the weekend chart behind new releases 'Street Fighter' and others, but it is enough to break the previous record.
The previous mark for a straight Austen adaptation was held by 2005's 'Pride and Prejudice', which opened to $2.8 million. The overall record for a period-set Austen film was 2016's 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' with a $5.3 million debut.
The new film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, and Caitríona Balfe, and is directed by Georgia Oakley. While its per-screen average of $2,633 is lower than some past Austen hits like 'Emma.', its opening haul is a new high for the genre.
ScreenRant notes the film's domestic debut is the third-best for any Austen-derived work, trailing only 'Clueless' and 'Bridget Jones's Diary'.
