Nexon May Be Taking Over StarCraft 3, Report Claims
A major shift for the StarCraft franchise might be in the works. According to a report in the Korean newspaper Chosun, developer and publisher Nexon is close to finalizing a deal with Blizzard for the rights to create a sequel.
The report, which Eurogamer covered, cites a "senior game industry official" who claims the contract is on the verge of being completed. If signed, Nexon would gain the ability to develop a new StarCraft game. It's not yet clear if this would be a direct follow-up to StarCraft 2 or a new entry in the series.
What kind of game it would be is also up in the air. Earlier reports have suggested Blizzard and Nexon are collaborating on a StarCraft shooter, which contradicts the idea of a traditional real-time strategy sequel. Blizzard itself is also rumored to be working on its own internal StarCraft shooter project.
With BlizzCon scheduled for September 12-13, fans are expecting a StarCraft-related announcement. The recent surprise update to StarCraft 2 after years of dormancy has only fueled speculation. All eyes are now on the convention for official word on the franchise's future.
