Next-Gen Xbox Could Reportedly Cost a Staggering $1,800
Microsoft’s next Xbox console might cost as much as a high-end gaming PC, according to a new report.
Fortune reports that the Project Helix console is internally projected to hit the market at a price between $1,200 and $1,800, per Kotaku and Polygon. That eye-watering figure would only apply if Microsoft decides not to subsidize the hardware cost, a practice common in the console business.
The console is reportedly slated for a 2028 launch. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously cited affordability as a major challenge for the project, citing rising memory and storage costs driven by the AI industry.
Microsoft traditionally sells consoles at a loss, a point echoed by former Xbox boss Phil Spencer in 2022. However, even with a subsidy, it’s unclear how much it could reduce a console projected to cost nearly two grand.
Fortune’s report also mentions a next-gen Xbox handheld device planned for the 2027 holiday season, which has reportedly caused internal conflict. The Windows team and the Xbox division are said to be clashing over whether the handheld should run a trimmed-down version of Windows or a custom Xbox OS.
