Next One Piece Movie Ditches the Straw Hats to Adapt Canon God Valley Incident
The next One Piece film is breaking a 15-movie tradition by abandoning the series' main crew. As reported by /Film, Toei Animation revealed at the One Piece Day 2026 convention that 'One Piece Film: God Valley' is slated for a summer 2027 release in Japan.
The film is notable for being the first canonical entry in the franchise's cinematic history. It will adapt the God Valley Incident, a major historical event from the manga's lore that occurred 38 years before the current story. The incident involved a large-scale battle and genocide on God Valley island.
Crucially, per /Film, the story does not feature a single one of the series' main protagonists, like Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Instead, it focuses on characters like Gol D. Roger, the Rocks Pirates, and a young Monkey D. Garp during a pivotal clash. While characters such as Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido appear, they are not recurring figures in the main anime narrative.
This marks a significant departure. All 15 previous One Piece movies have centered on Luffy and his crew, typically in original, non-canon adventures designed for broad accessibility. 'God Valley' will instead dive deep into established, foundational lore.
The announcement also confirmed a follow-up film, 'One Piece Film: Baad,' is scheduled for 2029.
