Nicolas Cage says the MCU is now a well-funded WWE

Nicolas Cage has thrown a bit of shade at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, calling its current output a "well-funded and glorified WWE." Per The Hollywood Reporter, the actor made the comments during a Q&A at Fan Expo Dallas.

Cage praised the MCU's early stories as "terrific" and "marvelous," but noted a shift. He told the crowd, per TheWrap, that it's hard not to see the modern movies as wrestling matches when he watches "50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight."

The actor, who recently starred in the canceled Prime Video series 'Spider-Noir,' contrasted his own project with the MCU's current focus. He told the audience, according to THR, that he liked 'Spider-Noir' because "it wasn't cut into the fight. It was a detective story."

He concluded by saying he'd like to see the MCU "get back to telling the stories and not just cutting to the wrestling match." According to MovieWeb, Cage's critique came a few weeks after his show was canceled.

Cage has played Marvel characters twice before, as Johnny Blaze in Sony's 'Ghost Rider' films, but has never been part of the MCU.
