Nintendo Life Readers Split On SimCity SNES Box Art
Nintendo Life has pitted two regional box arts for the SNES classic SimCity against each other in its weekly Box Art Brawl poll.
According to the site, the Western cover for all regions outside Japan is the iconic design where building rooftops spell out the game's title in a sunset-colored font. The Japanese cover is described as far more unusual, depicting a retro-futuristic machine with a small screen showing a city being hit by a tornado.
In comments highlighted by Nintendo Life, voters were divided. Some praised the Japanese art's creativity, with one calling it "cool and weird" and another appreciating the inclusion of disaster buttons, including one for a monster. Others argued the Western design was clearer and more nostalgic, with one reader calling the Japanese version "confusing."
An interesting note emerged in the comments, as pointed out by the outlet's readers: the Japanese SNES art is reportedly a recycled version of the cover from the original 1989 PC release, featuring a tornado. Some voters said this lack of originality swayed them toward the Western design.
As of the writing, the poll showed the Western cover leading with 64% of 60 votes, compared to 36% for the Japanese design.
