Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Becomes Biggest Hollywood Hit Ever in South Korea

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' is now the highest-grossing international movie in South Korean box office history, according to an exclusive report from Variety. The film has earned a total of 139.2 billion won, or roughly $101.5 million, as of October 11, pushing past 'Avatar: The Way of Water' to take the crown.
Per Variety, the Universal release now stands as the top-grossing Hollywood title ever released in the territory. Only two local Korean films have made more money. The movie has sold 12 million tickets, meaning nearly a quarter of the country's population has seen it.
The film has dominated charts, holding the number one spot for seven weekends straight, a record for an international title in Korea. It is also Nolan's most successful film in the market and the biggest ever for Universal there. IMAX screenings have been a huge driver, with the film setting a new record for that format and selling out shows for five consecutive weeks.
Variety notes that 'The Odyssey' reached the 10 million admissions milestone in just 33 days, a speed unmatched by any non-franchise international film. It's also the first international film with a 15+ age rating and the first movie released in August to ever hit that mark in Korea.
