Sony left comments on for a State of Play livestream for Phantom Blade Zero, and viewers made their feelings perfectly clear. The YouTube and Twitch chats were flooded with repetitive "no disc no buy" posts, per IGN.
This was not unexpected, as fans had previously flagged the event as a protest venue after Sony announced it would end PlayStation disc production for new games in 2028. The game itself, a promising action title, was largely lost in the noise.
The planned backlash includes a wider boycott. Organizers, including the 'Does it play?' social media account, are calling for a one-week "PSBlackout" in August. They are urging players to log off and avoid purchases across all Sony platforms.
Sony has shown no sign of backing down. The company has pointed to an 82% digital sales ratio and stated the decision aligns with consumer trends. Analysts cited by IGN also suggest a reversal is unlikely, given the higher revenue share Sony keeps from digital store sales.
As a result, titles such as Phantom Blade Zero may keep facing a wave of protest chatter unrelated to their own content, at least for the foreseeable future.
