Practical Magic 2 tracking for strong opening, Bullock eyes part 3
Early box office tracking for Practical Magic 2 is looking strong. According to /Film, projections have the sequel earning between $40 and $54 million domestically in its opening weekend next week. It faces minimal competition from other new releases.
That debut would be a significant turnaround. The original 1998 film, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, reportedly made $68.3 million worldwide on a $75 million budget. Both stars are returning for the sequel.
Per TheWrap, Bullock is already weighing the possibility of a third film. In a Vanity Fair interview, she said a Practical Magic 3 would happen "if this takes off," adding that they would "pass the torch to the girls." She was referencing co-stars Joey King and Maisie Williams, who play the next generation of witches.
The sequel also sees the return of Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the aunts. King's casting replaced original young star Evan Rachel Wood, a move director Susanne Bier told Variety was due to the characters' ages, not a personal decision.
Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on September 10.
