Resident Evil Director Already Plotting Sequels Despite One-Off Plan

Director Zach Cregger initially saw his new Resident Evil movie as a one-time gig. But now, with the film in theaters, he's already cooking up ideas for more, according to an interview with Polygon.
Cregger, best known for directing Weapons, told Polygon he approached the adaptation by trying to capture the feeling of being trapped in a Resident Evil nightmare, rather than directly adapting a specific game's story. The movie follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, trying to survive a zombie-infested Raccoon City.
The director said his mindset was originally "one and done" with the Capcom franchise. However, he admitted that now the film is finished, his brain is spinning with possibilities. "I've already got other ideas of what could happen," he told the outlet.
His next project is already locked in: an original sci-fi film called The Flood, produced by Amblin Entertainment and slated for release in August 2028. But Cregger left the door open for a return to Resident Evil after that, saying, "Who can say? Anything could happen."
Early box office tracking, per a Deadline report cited by Polygon, suggests the film could have a strong opening weekend, potentially setting a new franchise record with a domestic haul between $35 million and $50 million.
