Resident Evil Reboot Eyes Record Box Office Haul
Zach Cregger's upcoming Resident Evil movie is projected to smash the franchise's domestic opening weekend record. According to early reports cited by Collider, the film could debut with as much as three times the haul of the current record-holder, Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Sony is reportedly giving the reboot a major theatrical push, banking on the director's hot streak following the hits Barbarian and Weapons. The new film stars Austin Abrams and reportedly cost $80 million to make.
Current estimates point to a domestic opening between $35 million and $50 million, with some projections even suggesting over $70 million. For comparison, 2021's reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, grossed just $42 million globally.
The story follows a medical courier trapped in Raccoon City during an outbreak. It hits theaters on September 18.
