Ridley Scott confirms new Alien prequel with Michael Fassbender's David
Ridley Scott has officially confirmed a new Alien movie is coming, and it's picking up the thread left dangling by 2017's Alien: Covenant. According to Collider, the director told the Los Angeles Times the project will continue the story of Michael Fassbender's android, David.
Scott revealed that the narrative will find David building what he called a "brave new world for himself." The filmmaker remains fixated on the concept of artificial intelligence running amok. "AIs can go off," Scott said. "And if they do, it's like a bomb."
This confirmation follows the cliffhanger ending of Covenant, where David had replaced the synthetic Walter and taken control of the colony ship Covenant with its 2,000 sleeping colonists and a stash of Facehugger embryos. Per Collider, Scott had previously resisted letting other filmmakers use the David character, wanting to keep the storyline for himself.
Polygon notes this announcement is a bit of a reversal for Scott, who had recently suggested his time steering the Alien franchise might be over. The new prequel will exist alongside other active projects, including a follow-up to Alien: Romulus and the FX series Alien: Earth.
