Ridley Scott plans a third film to follow Prometheus and Alien: Covenant
Ridley Scott is plotting a return to the Alien franchise to continue the story he began with 2012's Prometheus. In an interview with the LA Times while promoting his new film, the director listed several titles he intends to make, which reportedly include a follow-up to both Prometheus and its 2017 sequel Alien: Covenant.
That sequel ended with a cliffhanger for the android David, played by Michael Fassbender. Per MovieWeb, David stole a ship at the conclusion of Covenant to experiment with Xenomorphs. Scott reportedly promised that a new film would feature David building "a brave new world for himself."
The director's concerns about modern artificial intelligence could fuel the narrative. Scott reportedly sees AI as a technology that could reach an incendiary point, warning it might "go off, and if they do, it's like a bomb." He views David as a vehicle to explore those fears within the Alien universe.
MovieWeb notes that any new film from Scott would need to compete with recent successful entries in the franchise, like the film Alien: Romulus and the TV series Alien: Earth. The outlet suggests Scott has the talent to breathe new life into David's story arc, which it calls the best part of the prequels, but that the project would require a careful thematic balance.
Nothing is official yet, but Scott's plans point toward an attempt to address narrative issues from the earlier films.
