Riot Co-Founder Calls League MMO a 'Grail Quest' as Development Grinds On
The long-awaited League of Legends MMO is still in development, described by a Riot co-founder as the studio's "grail quest." Per IGN, Mark Merrill discussed the project at a recent PAX event, acknowledging the high stakes and difficulty.
Merrill said the team jokingly calls the MMO the "grail," noting that many "brave knights" might die on the journey. He emphasized the challenge of executing such a large-scale project while trying to meet player expectations.
Comments online reflected significant skepticism, particularly from the fighting game community. This follows Riot's recent decision to end active development for its fighting game 2XKO later this year. Some fans on social media questioned Riot's ability to support a live-service MMO long-term.
Development has seen major shifts. In 2024, Merrill announced a "reset" for the project, taking it back to the drawing board. A former World of Warcraft developer was hired by Riot earlier this year, which some saw as a positive sign.
The project was first announced in 2021. A former lead producer warned in 2022 there was "no guarantee" it would ever release, and he left the company the following year. Merrill has previously asked fans for patience, suggesting that a lack of news means the team is hard at work.
