Rose trailer drops as director praises Sandra Hüller's awards-worthy performance
A new trailer for the film "Rose" has debuted, showcasing Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller's latest role. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hüller plays a woman in the 17th century who assumes a man's identity to serve as a soldier after a major European conflict ends.
Director Markus Schleinzer is already making a bold awards prediction for his star. "If she's not going to be nominated for this one, I'm going berserk," he told the outlet. He recounted how Hüller meticulously prepared for the part, even debating whether to lower her voice, before they realized his natural voice was higher than hers.
The film first screened at the Berlin film festival earlier this year, where Hüller won a Silver Bear award for best lead performance. It has since premiered in North America at the Telluride festival and is now showing in New York.
Schleinzer said the story was inspired by a historical account of a woman executed for living as a man, which he connected to modern fears felt by marginalized groups. He wrote the script in a novelistic style and specifically sought out Hüller for the lead after being captivated by her work.
Shot in black-and-white on location near the German border, the film is described as having a handmade aesthetic. Schleinzer praised Hüller's dynamic process on set, noting she brings a fresh, lived-in quality to each take, making the character feel vividly alive.
