Ryse: Son of Rome was planned as Xbox's own Assassin's Creed

Remember Ryse: Son of Rome? IGN reports that the 2013 Xbox exclusive had much bigger ambitions. The game was originally designed to be a sprawling, multi-era historical saga, taking cues from the structure of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise.

Those grand plans were never realized. According to the report, Ryse's poor critical reception and disappointing sales ultimately sank developer Crytek's vision. The game's failure also reportedly crushed Microsoft's hopes of having a flagship action-adventure series to rival PlayStation's offerings.
