Sacha Baron Cohen to star in Quentin Tarantino's first play The Popinjay Cavalier
Sacha Baron Cohen has been confirmed as the star of Quentin Tarantino's debut play, a West End production titled "The Popinjay Cavalier." According to reports from TheWrap and JoBlo, Cohen signed on to play the titular role in the 1830s-set swashbuckling comedy.
The play, described by TheWrap as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise," is scheduled to premiere at London's Phoenix Theatre on March 18, 2027. Preview performances will begin on February 23 of that year, with tickets going on sale to the public this Monday.
Tarantino shared his excitement in a statement obtained by TheWrap, saying, "I’m keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out." Cohen also provided a characteristically cheeky quote for the announcement: "When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions... I have made him promise not to be gentle."
The production is being developed by Sony's Tom Rothman and producer Sonia Friedman, who called the project "quite an adventure" in a joint statement. They also praised Cohen as "a fearless, brilliantly inventive actor with the wit, mischief and daring this role demands."
The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Tom Pye, fight director Philip d'Orleans, and composer Tim Phillips, among others.
