Scarlett Johansson hunts a killer in first 'Exorcist: Martyrs' teaser

The first footage for "The Exorcist: Martyrs" has arrived, introducing Scarlett Johansson's lead detective. Per MovieWeb, the teaser reveals Johansson as NYPD homicide detective Julie Miller, a single mother whose life is upended following the execution of a notorious serial killer.

Director Mike Flanagan told Esquire that Miller's job often pulls her away from her 12-year-old son, Max, with her own mother, Mary, helping to pick up the slack. The executed killer, known as "Father Sunday," is played by John Leguizamo. According to Flanagan, the execution "doesn't go exactly as they expect it to."

Father Sunday was known for staging murder scenes that mimicked the brutal martyrdom of Roman Catholic saints. His death, however, does not end the threat. Johansson's character teams up with another detective, Gina Restrepo, played by Sasha Calle, to uncover an "otherworldly" danger.

The film features a large cast including Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Carla Gugino. "The Exorcist: Martyrs" is scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on March 12, 2027.
