Scrapped GTA 5 DLC Might Have Sent Trevor to Paris, Leaks Suggest
Leaked files from Grand Theft Auto 5 suggest a cancelled story expansion would have taken the series overseas for the first time in over a decade, per IGN.
A recent leak of cut content included assets for the long-abandoned single-player DLC, which Rockstar formally announced back in 2013. The files reportedly show an unfinished level featuring a luxury apartment with a balcony overlooking Paris, complete with a view of the Eiffel Tower.
According to the report, the DLC would have followed Trevor Philips as a secret agent doing dirty jobs for the government. While the Parisian backdrop was only a flat image and not an explorable 3D city, it suggests the adventure might have briefly gone international.
Rockstar's former creative director Dan Houser had previously stated that the series was so inherently American that a full game set elsewhere like London wouldn't work as well. The only previous overseas trip in the franchise was the 1999 expansion Grand Theft Auto: London 1969.
Former Rockstar developer Joe Robino told IGN the DLC was about halfway finished when it was cancelled, largely because GTA Online became a massive cash cow. "It was really really good," Robino said, expressing frustration over the decision.
Some elements from the canned DLC were later repurposed for GTA Online updates. With Grand Theft Auto 6 now in development, a revival of this specific expansion seems unlikely.
