Shailene Woodley reveals heartbreak over cut Amazing Spider-Man 2 role
Shailene Woodley says she learned her Mary Jane Watson scenes got cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a year after she filmed them, per Variety. The actress called the moment a crushing blow for a lifelong fan.
Woodley explained in a recent SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations interview that landing the role was a dream come true. She told the story, as reported by both Variety and TheWrap, that she filmed about three scenes opposite star Andrew Garfield.
She says she received a call informing her the scenes were being removed from the final film. Producers reportedly told her the story had too many characters, and they would wait to introduce Mary Jane until after the storyline involving Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, concluded.
Woodley admitted to TheWrap that she was left wondering if the official explanation was the whole truth. She joked that perhaps her performance was the real issue.
The filmmakers ultimately shelved plans for a third Garfield-led Spider-Man movie, meaning Woodley's version of Mary Jane never got her chance to swing into action.
