Sony gives base PS5 a Pro-style AI upscaler named QSSR
Sony is bringing a new AI upscaling technology, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution or QSSR, to standard PlayStation 5 consoles, according to VGC and Kotaku. This is a different, more streamlined version of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) tech found in the PS5 Pro, designed to boost image quality and stability on the older hardware.
The first games to get the upgrade are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, both of which are receiving a patch today to add QSSR as a graphics option. Per VGC, Sony says the Pro's PSSR remains the "gold standard," but QSSR is an evolution being offered broadly to all PlayStation developers.
Technical analysis from Digital Foundry, cited by VGC, called the tech "remarkable," noting substantial improvements in temporal stability and detail, particularly for Marvel's Wolverine. A developer from Insomniac Games said the tech adds more clarity to environments like the streets of Madripoor.
A rendering engineer from Sucker Punch Productions stated that the team had long wanted base PS5 players to experience Pro-level image quality and that QSSR is a step toward that goal, as reported by Kotaku.
