Sony's 'Ramayana' Epic Gets Global Release Date in November
Sony Pictures will handle the global rollout of the upcoming Indian epic "Ramayana," according to Variety and TheWrap. The film is set to open in theaters worldwide outside of India on November 6.
The Indian release by Dharma Distribution follows two days later on November 8, timed for Diwali. The film is described as the first part of a planned two-part series.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the movie stars Ranbir Kapoor as the exiled prince Rama and Sai Pallavi as his wife Sita. Yash plays the demon king Ravana, who abducts Sita, setting off a war.
TheWrap reports the film boasts a high-profile creative team. Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are scoring the film, while visual effects are handled by DNEG. The project is also notable as the first Indian production to receive the "Filmed for IMAX" label.
Despite opening against a crowded November weekend that includes "The Cat in the Hat," "Godzilla Minus Zero," and specialty releases, TheWrap suggests the film could draw significant turnout from the Indian diaspora, citing the overseas success of films like "RRR."
