Star Citizen's Squadron 42 delayed to 2027 to avoid GTA 6 buzz
The single-player Star Citizen spin-off Squadron 42 has been pushed back to the second quarter of 2027, according to a report from Eurogamer. Studio head Chris Roberts confirmed the delay in a blog post, moving the title from a planned late 2026 launch.
Roberts directly blamed the impending release of Grand Theft Auto VI for the schedule change. He argued that launching his game this fall would see it overshadowed by the Rockstar title's media dominance, despite GTA 6's reported absence from PC at that time.
Per the blog, Roberts stated he was unwilling to risk the project after twelve years of development. The studio now intends to show the game to select influencers and longtime supporters this October before locking in a final date.
The game, which began development in 2014, features a cast including Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill. Its delay comes as the parent project, Star Citizen, recently surpassed $1 billion in total crowdfunding revenue.
