Star Trek reboot directors reveal it's a dark film set far in future

The upcoming Star Trek movie reboot from directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will boldly go where no Trek film has gone before, according to Empire Magazine. The duo confirmed their film will not feature any legacy characters from past movies or shows.
Daley told Empire the story is set "a little further in the future" and in a different timeline, but clarified it is explicitly not the J.J. Abrams Kelvin timeline. This means the Chris Pine-led crew will not return.
The directors, known for comedies like Game Night, emphasized this film is a dramatic departure. "I would say it's probably our darkest film that we've ever written," Daley said. "It's not a comedy."
He explained the tone will find levity through characters, not outright jokes. Goldstein added the goal is for it to be a "fun watch" where audiences are engaged, not necessarily laughing.
The report notes the setting after 2263 could allow for familiar events, even without familiar faces. Paramount is moving forward with a fresh, serious take on the franchise.
