State of Decay 3 developer confirms layoffs after gaining independence
Undead Labs, the studio behind State of Decay 3, is now independent from Xbox, but the move came with deep cuts. The developer confirmed what it called "significant" layoffs, per IGN.
Studio head Philip Holt told IGN the game's development schedule remains intact. "State of Decay 3 remains in active development, and these changes will not impact the game's launch," Holt said.
The studio announced the layoffs and its new independent status on LinkedIn, as reported by Eurogamer and Kotaku. The post stated the team was saying goodbye to a significant number of colleagues, calling them exceptionally talented developers.
Kotaku reports that a source indicated the cuts may have affected up to 40 developers. The outlet also noted that, as part of its separation, Undead Labs retained its intellectual property and received some runway funding.
State of Decay 3 is still targeting a 2027 release. Eurogamer adds that the studio aims to start a closed beta before the end of this year, and the game will still be available on Game Pass.
