The Odyssey steals highest-grossing R-rated crown from Deadpool & Wolverine
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is now the biggest R-rated movie ever at the worldwide box office. Variety reports the epic has earned $1.352 billion globally, just squeaking past the $1.338 billion total of 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine.
Per /Film, Ryan Reynolds shared congratulations on social media, posting a mash-up image with a cheeky caption. His film still holds the domestic crown, however. JoBlo notes that while The Odyssey has $516.3 million domestically, Deadpool & Wolverine earned $636 million in North America.
The achievement makes The Odyssey Nolan's highest-grossing film, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises. According to /Film's reporting, the director's success with this and other non-franchise hits has made him the third-highest-grossing director ever, passing the Russo brothers.
The Odyssey, released by Universal in July with a reported $250 million budget, is still playing in theaters. As JoBlo points out, it's not even the summer's top film, trailing behind the massive Spider-Man: Brand New Day domestically.
This box office shift shows audiences are still turning out in huge numbers for director-driven event cinema, even with an R rating.
