The Witcher 3's new expansion shows off chain combat and a new realm

The Witcher 3's new expansion shows off chain combat and a new realm

Geralt is swinging a new weapon in his final adventure. According to IGN, a demo for the upcoming expansion "Songs of the Past" showed the Witcher using a silver chain to grapple and decapitate a new monster called a Swarmion. The chain is a weapon from the Witcher lore, first seen in the original game's intro and the books.

CD Projekt Red revealed the expansion at gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. Per the presentation, the story sends Geralt to the idyllic new realm of Letten, the homeland of his bard friend Dandelion. The quest shown saw Geralt meeting Dandelion's stern grandmother and agreeable cousin, Lilla, before setting out to find the missing bard after a vision of a cursed "Garden of Thorns."

The expansion is being developed by Fool's Theory, a studio with many CD Projekt Red veterans. Level design lead Miles Tost told IGN this is Geralt's last story before Ciri takes over in The Witcher 4. The expansion is expected to be comparable in size to the massive "Blood and Wine" DLC, potentially offering 30 hours of content.

In more lighthearted news, GameSpot reports that the expansion, and likely the associated remaster, will finally allow players to pet dogs. This was a notable omission in the original game.

"Songs of the Past" is set for release in 2027. It will launch alongside The Witcher 3 Remastered, which was announced for a September release and includes visual and gameplay upgrades.
