The Witcher Remake shelved until The Witcher 4 development advances
The long-awaited remake of the original Witcher game is officially on hold, according to CD Projekt Red. Both IGN and VGC report the developer has confirmed the project is paused while its primary studio, Fool's Theory, focuses on other priorities.
Per CD Projekt Red's statement to GameSpot, Fool's Theory's main team is working on The Witcher 3's upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, slated for 2027. A smaller part of the studio is also supporting development on The Witcher 4.
The core reason for the delay is technical dependency. The remake is being built on the foundation and tools created for The Witcher 4. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, CD Projekt Red stated development on the remake has been "temporarily integrated" with the next mainline game, and they need those new assets and pipelines ready before efficient work can resume.
A CDPR representative told outlets, "As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development."
The remake was first announced in 2022, with Fool's Theory leading the charge on a ground-up rebuild in Unreal Engine 5. There's no indication the project is cancelled, but its timeline is now intrinsically linked to The Witcher 4's progress.
With The Witcher 4 currently slated for a 2028 release, fans shouldn't expect the remake to arrive before then.
