Tomb Raider remake reveals skill trees, crafting, and focus meter, upsetting fans

Tomb Raider remake reveals skill trees, crafting, and focus meter, upsetting fans

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is getting an RPG-style makeover that's dividing the fanbase. According to a new behind-the-scenes video covered by IGN, the remake of the original 1996 game will feature a skill tree, an herb-brewing crafting system, and a new "Focus" meter.

The skill tree lets players redeem in-game artifacts for skill points to unlock weapon upgrades and abilities, like reduced damage and improved healing. The herb brewing system allows for creating buffs. The Focus meter, per IGN, builds as players deal damage, take hits, and dodge, allowing Lara Croft to slow down time and perform acrobatic maneuvers.

Crystal Dynamics design director Jason Epps explained the shift, telling IGN, "When I played the Survivor series and I could suddenly affect and increase Lara's power in the game, I felt much more engaged."

However, as reported by Eurogamer, the changes are not going down well with some longtime fans. The outlet highlighted comments from forums where users expressed disgust, with one asking, "Isn't she supposed [to be a] veteran treasure hunter in this game? Why would she be learning new skills at her age?"

Kotaku also noted the backlash, pointing to Reddit users who argued skill trees undermine the idea of Lara being a seasoned explorer at her peak. The outlet criticized the inclusion of resource collecting and crafting as a tired AAA trend.

The game, developed by Flying Wild Hog in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, is now scheduled for release on February 12, 2027.
