Transformers: The Movie 40th anniversary rerelease expands theater run
The 40th anniversary rerelease of 1986's animated 'Transformers: The Movie' is sticking around in theaters longer than planned. The Hollywood Reporter says the run, originally scheduled to end this week, has been extended with hundreds of cinemas worldwide now offering showtimes into early October.
The event, branded by Hasbro as 'The Apology Tour' in reference to Optimus Prime's early demise, has outperformed expectations. According to THR, the remastered 4K presentation earned $3.1 million domestically over the weekend from 1,454 locations, placing it seventh on the box office chart. Its global total has now passed $5 million.
Fathom Entertainment's vice president of marketing, Shannah Miller, told The Hollywood Reporter the company is 'thrilled' with the response. The rerelease package includes a new 12-minute short, 'Optimus Prime: Awakening,' featuring the final performance of voice actor Peter Cullen, who died last month.
