Wolverine Director Mike Daly Responds to Gameplay Backlash
The director of Marvel's Wolverine has commented after a recent gameplay showcase for the PS5 exclusive drew widespread criticism online, IGN reports.
Extended footage revealed story moments, character interactions, and combat, including a boss battle against a Sentinel. Critics online latched onto specific elements, such as Wolverine following a red scent trail, which some compared to overly obvious guidance systems in other games. Others took issue with the voice acting during a heated argument between Wolverine and Sabertooth.
The Sentinel boss fight became a particular target. Some social media users posted side-by-side comparisons, alleging its design was too similar to a boss encounter in a 2007 Ben 10 title, while others unfavorably compared it to a fight from the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine game.
Speaking to TheGamer, director Mike Daly said the studio is "pretty used to" such reactions, calling it a "good problem to have" that comes with adapting beloved characters. He stated the team's focus is on making the best game for Wolverine, not on avoiding every potential complaint.
IGN's own hands-on preview offered a more positive take, with Mitchell Saltzman noting the combat "absolutely nails the spirit of Wolverine" but questioning if it would remain engaging for a full campaign. The game is scheduled for release on September 15, 2026.
