Xbox disc-to-digital program launches next week
Microsoft has officially announced a new feature that converts physical game discs into digital licenses. According to an Xbox Wire post reported by Polygon, the program begins on August 31.
Xbox VP Jason Ronald stated the feature is designed to merge the advantages of digital ownership with physical media, offering players more flexibility. The announcement, per Polygon, positions this as part of Xbox's commitment to game preservation as technology evolves.
The process involves inserting a supported disc into the console and launching the game to claim a digital copy. Once claimed, players can access digital benefits like Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming where available. The original disc will still function normally.
Polygon reports that a vast library of titles for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles will be compatible at launch, with thousands of games supported initially and more to follow. Xbox Insiders will get early access to test the feature starting next week.
