Xolo Maridueña confirms Blue Beetle return for James Gunn's Superman sequel
Xolo Maridueña will suit up as Blue Beetle again in James Gunn's upcoming DCU film, 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow.' The actor confirmed the casting news in an interview with Variety, per MovieWeb.
Maridueña described getting the call from Gunn while he was on a trip with friends in Japan. He told the outlet the director's call came as a complete shock, prompting him to leave the room to take it. He returned to his friends to share the exciting, off-the-record news.
The actor expressed feeling honored to be asked back to play Jaime Reyes in the new DC Universe, noting that nothing in Hollywood is ever guaranteed. He credited Gunn and the broader DC leadership for bringing the character into the fold, comparing the surprise inclusion to a classic adventure movie trope.
'Man of Tomorrow' is set two years after the first new Superman film, placing its story in the summer of 2027. The plot will involve Superman, Lex Luthor, and the villain Brainiac, creating a scenario where other heroes like Blue Beetle could be drawn into the conflict.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
