A $10M horror film passes Sydney Sweeney's $400M thriller at the box office
Kane Parsons' micro-budget horror film 'Backrooms' has officially outgrossed Sydney Sweeney's thriller 'The Housemaid' at the global box office, per MovieWeb.
According to figures from Box Office Mojo, 'Backrooms' has now earned over $402.5 million worldwide. That puts it just ahead of 'The Housemaid', which finished its run with $400.5 million. The outlet notes the low-cost A24 film is still adding to its total nearly four months after release.
The financial contrast is staggering. 'Backrooms' was reportedly made for under $10 million, meaning it has earned roughly forty times its budget. 'The Housemaid', a Lionsgate adaptation of a BookTok hit directed by Paul Feig, had a much larger, though undisclosed, budget.
Parsons' film, which began as a series of viral YouTube shorts, shattered records for its studio. Its domestic opening weekend haul of $81.4 million more than tripled A24's previous high mark.
With a sequel to 'Backrooms' reportedly in development and 'The Housemaid's Secret' arriving next December, the two franchises could swap positions again soon.
