Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender gets surprise theatrical run for awards

In a move that's caught fans by surprise, the upcoming animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is heading to the big screen for a brief moment. Variety reports the movie will have a one-week, awards-qualifying run in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York starting July 24.

While the film is primarily destined for Paramount+, where it will debut on July 25, this theatrical window is a strategic play for awards season consideration. As reported by Polygon, the screenings will be held at AMC Theatres.

The limited release is a win for fans who wanted a chance to see the new Avatar adventure in a cinema. IGN notes there's a catch, however: it's a very short window and only in major markets before the film streams globally.
