Clayface body horror thriller is already profitable after eight days

The DC Studios thriller "Clayface" is off to a shockingly strong start, according to a report from MovieWeb. The R-rated body horror film, which hit theaters on October 23, has already crossed its reported production budget after just over a week.

Per MovieWeb, the film was produced for about $44 million. It has now pulled in more than $36.9 million domestically and roughly $68 million worldwide while playing in 3,478 theaters. It opened to $24 million domestically last weekend.

The film faced unusual competition this past Friday. A three-hour A24 documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, "You Can See Everything," briefly edged it out for the daily top spot as it expanded for Halloween. The fact that "Clayface" held so close to that film suggests strong word-of-mouth.

"Clayface" follows actor Matt Hagen, who turns to an experimental procedure after being disfigured. The procedure has horrific, transformative results. Tom Rhys Harries stars in the lead role.

Mike Flanagan, who publicly campaigned to make a Clayface movie for years, wrote the story. The script was rewritten by Hossein Amini, and James Watkins directed. Matt Reeves, James Gunn, and Peter Safran are among the producers.
