Luca Guadagnino's AI Film 'Artificial' Submitted as Golden Globes Comedy

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reveals that Neon has submitted Luca Guadagnino's film 'Artificial' for Golden Globes consideration in the musical/comedy categories, not drama. The deadline for submissions was Friday.

The film, penned by humorist Simon Rich, is a portrait of the rise of artificial intelligence. It was originally dropped by Amazon/MGM, allegedly over fears of angering tech figures portrayed, before Neon picked it up. Per THR, it has since screened to rave reviews.

This classification means 'Artificial' will compete for best picture against titles like 'Wild Horse Nine', 'The Invite', and 'Project Hail Mary'. It avoids the drama race, which includes films such as 'The Odyssey' and 'Dune: Part Three'.

The move also places lead actor Yura Borisov, who portrays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, in the comedy actor race. He'll contend with the likes of Ryan Gosling and Tom Cruise instead of actors like Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson.

Supporting actor Andrew Garfield, who plays Sam Altman, is considered the film's strongest awards prospect and will compete in the supporting category. Monica Barbaro, who plays OpenAI's Mira Murati, is up for supporting actress.

THR notes the film has evoked audible laughter in screenings, particularly at Sutskever's quirks and Ike Barinholtz's portrayal of Elon Musk. The 84th Golden Globe Awards are set for January 10, 2027.
